I read many essay books and after each of them, got confused even more. This book explains the goal of the essay in simple language that anybody can understand. After the goal, it explains the how and defines the role of the parent (or the teacher). Very satisfied.
As an independent educational consultant, I'm always looking for resources to share with my high school students and their families. I've used the WOW Writing Workshop approach in my college application workshops for several years, and it is incredibly powerful. I now recommend that all my parents buy the Wow handbook for parents. It gives specific, actionable advice for parents who want to support their students, instead of get in their way.

This was a lot of help, both in giving me some perspective on the scary process of supporting a kid with ambitious college choices, and in the nitty-gritty of getting some writing done. The biggest lesson I learned from this guide was that no matter what the TOPIC of an essay prompt is, the SUBJECT is the applicant. This insight is very clarifying, and helped my student not get distracted in details about the topic in the prompt, and instead focus on how to show herself and her development in the context of the essay prompt topic.
This is a very realistic and sensible guide for parents that want to help navigate their children through the application process. All parents should read this BEFORE they say one word to their child about their essay.
What a lifesaver. Anyone who has a kid who has made, or is making, the leap from high school to college knows how intense the whole process can be. This little book calms everyone down. It did for my family. It's a very quick read that gets right to the point and I love the way it shares what exactly these colleges are looking for in the essay and the prompts. The "do's and the don't s. A lot of times, I find, the road block that gets in the way of parenting a teenager is choosing the right approach, reaching them. This book even helps with that, by supplying key questions to ask your child, questions that should lead to a productive conversation, that will intern help pull the best essay out of your child. My wife and I are looking forward to using the questions and approach the book offers when we go on vacation. And we are confidant that by the time we get back our daughter will be ready to dive right into the first draft of her essay.
This is a fantastic book for every parent with a stressed out kid trying to write college essays! It was a quick read - very direct and simple to understand. The message of the book really helped me to work with my son effectively on finding his voice and writing from his heart so that the college admissions teams could get to know him and his unique qualities and personality. The information provided in this book helped me guide him in a positive manner, and decreased stress for both of us. I liked that they explained to parents how they could help, but where it was important to "back off" so that their child's voice could come through. I was having a difficult time finding the balance, and he was overwhelmed trying to figure out what to write. We learned that he does not need to have a "topic" which was originally making us crazy. Instead we realized he needed , focus on something that impacted him (even if seems small) and provide an insight his growth and experiences. In the end, I felt that the readers of his essays would get a glimpse into the person he is and who he is becoming. I would highly recommend this for all parents - it is a reality check for both you and your kids that will take a huge weight off your shoulders!
