Originally published in 1951, this book by Dr. Sidney V. Haas, who introduced banana feeding in the therapy of celiac disease, and his son, Dr. Merrill P. Haas, represents the most extensive report published at the time on the subject.

The first two-thirds of the book deal with the historical aspects of the problem, the various theories of etiology, and the methods of treatment proposed by different workers in the field.

The final part of the book is devoted to the authors’ own experience and opinions, with comparisons of therapeutic results and prognosis on the basis of differences in dietary management.

“[T]he subject is treated comprehensively and objectively. The writers’ style is clear and direct, and their approach to controversial aspects of the problems of celiac disease is fair and judicious.”—JAMA Internal Medicine, January 1952

This is an excellent book and deserves five stars for its content. However, the Kindle edition I purchased from Amazon (published by Muriwai Books - also known as 'Pickle Partners Publishing') contains many errors, such as:

"a finding of normal **Eat** content of the stool"
"Roentgen-ray examination **is said to have was** receiving the following diet"
"When the **whole dietary is low, fat** must be somewhat restricted"
....and many more (**emphasis** is mine))

It looks like the seller of the Kindle edition has performed OCR scanning on a print copy of this book and then submitted it without having anyone proof read it.

Content wise, let me repeat again that the original authors Sidney V. Haas and Merrill P. Hass did an excellent job. The book is accessible to lay men, physicians and researchers. It is no nonsense, research and clinical experience are cited frequently and when speculations are made they are pointed out.

It's refreshing to read a book on a medical condition that is accessible yet professional. Many more recent publications are either excessively technical or sensationalist and anecdotal. This makes the 'Muriwai Books' Kindle edition with all of its errors all the more disappointing. If the publisher is to profit from the good work of these authors, the least they could do is make sure that their copy is proof read and presented without a myriad of errors.

Summing up, if you're interested in the history of what we call 'Celiac Disease' and the origins of what is now being called the 'Specific Carbohydrate Diet', buy this book. Just don't buy the Kindle edition, it's riddled with errors and the Kindle publisher does not deserve your money.

Management of Celiac Disease edition by Dr Sidney V Haas Dr Merrill P Haas Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

This book is about the work of Dr. Sidney Haas. The book was written at the end of his career, in the 1950's, before the adoption of a gluten-free diet for Celiacs. He was the first doctor to successfully treat, and possible cure, Celiac Disease. Before this diet, about 25 percent of children died of this mysterious disease. He had figured out that it was certain carbohydrates, not fat and proteins, that were causing the problem. This diet was different, however, than the universally adopted gluten-free diet today. His diet, which was called the Haas Specific Carbohydrate Diet, eliminated certain carbohydrates that were difficult to digest. (The diet is now called the SCD, or Specific Carbohydrate Diet). He believed that certain carbohydrates were feeding a disease causing gut flora, and removing those carbohydrates starved out that bacteria, allowing the patient to heal. When mainstream medicine dumped the SCD in favor of the easier to follow gluten-free diet, Dr. Haas still insisted it was the type of carbohydrate, not just the gluten. Modern research is now beginning to catch up to Dr. Haas, in both intestinal disorders and autism. The role of gut flora, and the influence of carbohydrates on those flora, are beginning to reveal themselves in research.

What is also interesting in this book, is he points out an odd behavior in some of the more severe patients, behavior that most parents of autistic children would recognize. He also mentions, as early as the 1920's, that other researchers in this field noticed this behavior and were "struck by the lack of attention" it recieved. Fast forward to modern times and many parents of autistic children with gi issues are still struck by this as well. This is a fascinating book. Dr. Haas covers the history of research done in the medical field on Celiacs, as well as his own research and experience.
To technical and limited useful information
I was studying celiac disease for school, and found this book via researching the Specific Carbohydrate diet. We have come a long way in trying to solve the mystery of this disease and many other digestive diseases. I found it very interesting to go back and see what the theories were just a mere 80 some years ago.
I love this book. Such a wonderful resource on the history of gluten free diets and celiac disease.
Excellent for understanding Celiac Disease and management of same.
The first part is the history of how Doctors and researchers tried to figure the cause of Celiac disease. I have not finished but am very pleased with my purchase.
I am now always SEARCHing for natural substances to fight gut imbalances and Leaky gut and For RA and PMR arthritic conditions. Hard to believe it is so hard to walk and move, but I had a knee replacement that I believe may have triggered my pre-disposition for autoimmune related diseases.
